Every move deserves first-class service and care.

A transition to a new chapter of life can be overwhelming. We are here to guide you through the process with patience and compassion.

We Understand

This isn't just logistics.
It's one of life's biggest transitions.

Whether you're downsizing from a family home, moving into senior living, or managing an estate after loss—we know this moment is filled with memory, emotion, and uncertainty.

For nearly two decades, we've walked alongside hundreds of families through these transitions. We listen without judgment, advise thoughtfully and stay involved until you are settled again.

What We Do

From the first conversation to the last picture hung.

We Listen First

Every family's situation is different. We begin by truly understanding your needs, timeline, and what matters most to you.

We Plan Together

Each move is unique. We create a thoughtful, customized plan to fit your specific circumstances.

We Handle the Details

Sorting, packing, coordinating movers, managing donations, setting up your new space—we take care of what overwhelms you.

We Create Home With You

Our work isn't done when the boxes are unpacked. We organize, place décor and hang pictures so that your new space feels like yours.

We Move with Compassion

This isn't just furniture and belongings. It's memories, history, and identity. We treat everything—and everyone—with dignity.

We Guide with Experience

With hundreds of successful moves across North Carolina and beyond, we know what to expect, can handle any unusual circumstances, and rely on our network of contacts to meet your specific needs.

Our Approach

A calm, organized process designed around you.

We've refined our process over 2 decades and 1200 moves. It's structured enough to keep everything on track, yet flexible enough to adapt to any situation. Our plans can evolve as the project moves forward.

From the first phone call through settling into your new home, we're by your side, managing logistics, navigating hurdles and offering reassurance every step of the way.

About Us

Meet the hearts behind
Here to Home.

For over two decades, the Here to Home team has assisted families in navigating senior moves, with grace, patience, and unwavering compassion.

Our Story

The partnership behind Here to Home.

Jennie Alwood

Founding Partner

Jennie founded Here to Home in 2008 after helping her own parents downsize to a single-level home. Drawing on 20 years in museum exhibition design, she created a scaled floor plan showing exactly what would fit—and the move went so beautifully her mother said, “You should do this for a living.” More than 1,200 families later, she still brings that same care to every transition as a Certified Senior Move Manager and NASMM member.

Carrie Salisbury

Managing Partner

Carrie pairs warmth with a steady sense of humor, keeping things light even on the most hectic move days. Her gift is breaking an overwhelming move into manageable steps, so families always know they don’t have to do it alone. A lifelong Raleigh native and Certified Senior Move Manager, she keeps every move organized, on schedule, and calm.

Our Team

The people who make it happen.

Every member of our team shares the same commitment to compassion, care, and excellence.

Ellery
Ellery
Team Lead
Ellery is our long-distance move specialist and materials manager, known for turning logistical chaos into calm with smart labeling systems and meticulous inventory tracking—she once traveled all the way to Boston to unpack longtime clients herself. A Durham native with an artistic, creative eye, she sees spaces differently, finding clever ways to repurpose furniture and rooms so every cherished belonging finds its place. Off the clock, she’s usually crocheting several projects at once and decompressing at home with her two dogs, Furiosa and Chalupa.
Chelsea
Chelsea
Team Lead
Chelsea brings a theater background to her work—where setting the feeling of a space is everything—and channels it into making each new home feel familiar, warm, and truly “known.” She helps clients focus on meaning over “stuff,” gently guiding them to keep what matters most while letting go of the rest with an open mind. A vegan with deep compassion for people and animals, that empathy is exactly what helps her connect with clients and understand what makes a house feel like home. She recharges with a good TV show, a strong cup of coffee, and—whenever possible—a nap.
Our Incredible Staff

The Muscle & The Magic

Beyond our partners and team leads is the incredible crew that actually makes the magic happen on the ground.

Packing up a lifetime of memories can feel incredibly daunting. You don’t have to wear yourself out doing it alone. Our staff members are the true heart and soul of our daily operations, bringing an invaluable sense of light-heartedness, warmth, and ease to a high-stress environment.

They are there to lift boxes and lift your spirits. Whether it’s sharing a laugh during a tough sorting session, meticulously wrapping a fragile heirloom, or keeping the energy positive when moving day throws a curveball, our team handles the details so you don't have to bear the emotional or physical weight alone. Their dedication, hard work, and bright energy, makes the moving process bearable.

We Listen, Then Plan

Moving is stressful, but we are here to ease that stress. First, we listen to your concerns, your timeline, and your goals. Then, we build a realistic proposal covering sorting, packing, logistics, and setup.

To take the guesswork out of what actually fits, we use specialized floor-planning software to plan your new home down to the inch. If a piece won't fit, we’ll know and make adjustments before moving day.

Sorting & Selecting

This is usually the most emotionally exhausting part of the job. We don't rush you, but we do keep you moving forward. We sit with you through the tough decisions and offer gentle, practical guidance on what to keep.

For the items you choose to let go of, we can handle the logistics entirely. We manage donations, coordinate item sales, ship heirlooms to family members, and book reliable junk haulers. You make the choice; we do the heavy lifting.

Smart Packing

We use premium, sturdy materials and recyclable supplies, but our real secret weapon is organization.

Unlike traditional movers who pack by room as it sits, we pack and label boxes according to where they are going in your new home. It takes a little more strategy upfront, but it saves hours of chaos later.

Moving & Unpacking Day

Moving day is chaotic by nature, but we exist to be the calm eye of the storm. We are on-site from start to finish, supervising the movers and ensuring your belongings are handled safely and efficiently.

Using our digital floor plan, on-site notes, and photographs of your previous setup, we unpack your items and replicate your familiar home organization as closely as possible from day one.

Hanging Pictures & Art

A week or two after the move, once the dust has settled and you’ve had a chance to actually breathe in your new space, we return to hang your art and pictures.

We don’t want to hurriedly place memories on a wall. This deliberate pause gives you time to get a feel for the natural light and flow of your new home before we hammer a single nail.

The Final Clear-Out

Finally, we return to your former home to tie up all the loose ends. We can coordinate the remaining donations and handle final disposal of items.

Our goal is to hand over a totally clear slate to the landlord or real estate agent. You focus on your new chapter; you never have to look back at the empty rooms or handle the leftover clutter.

Our Values

The principles that guide every move.

Three Mantras direct our thoughts and actions. Our values are simple.

Our Mantras

Moving is NEVER a problem

It’s an attitude. When something doesn’t go as planned, we don’t see it as a problem. It is just a different path forward. We navigate whatever circumstances we face with a smile!

We honor what Home means to you

It’s your home, it should feel like your home! We honor the way you want to live. We are not here to force changes or adhere to strict design rules. Your comfort is our priority.

We are not afraid of your Stuff

We all have physical, emotional, psychological “stuff”. Please don’t be embarrassed to share with us! We are not impacted by an overflowing closet or piles of paper the same way you are. A little perspective can make it feel manageable.

“Here to Home has assisted us with 3 moves for our parents! When it came time for our parents to move from independent living to assisted living (and, later, to skilled nursing), we were all emotionally stretched. They executed the physical move in such a way that our parents felt quickly at home in the new location.”

FAQ & Media

Questions we hear most often.

We know this process raises a lot of questions. Here are answers to the ones we hear most — and if yours isn't listed, we're always just a phone call away.

What is a Senior Move Manager? I've never heard of such a thing!

It really is as simple as it sounds! Think of us as your personal transition team—part project managers, part organizational experts, and part supportive friends. We specialize in navigating both the emotional and physical aspects of relocating later in life.

By combining our years of experience, specialized tools, and a trusted network of local contacts, we take the heavy lifting off your shoulders. We plan with you, inform your decisions, pack, unpack, organize, hang your favorite pictures, and even handle the logistics with the movers. We do whatever it takes to make settling into your new home feel peaceful and stress-free.

Do I have to use all of your services? My kids want to help me downsize!

Not at all. Every family is completely unique, and every move is different. We tailor our plan entirely around you and your specific circumstances.

If your family wants to handle the downsizing or you'd prefer to hang your own pictures, that is wonderful! Some clients just need us to design a spatial floor plan, while others want a hands-free, full-service experience. We wrap our services around the areas where you need us most and step back where you already have a great support system.

Do you provide supplies? I actually have some boxes saved from our last move 25 years ago!

We appreciate the thriftiness, but you can leave the supplies to us! Your team lead will arrive with absolutely everything needed to safely pack and protect your treasures.

At Here to Home, we use high-quality, standard-sized moving boxes, recyclable paper, and reusable bins because we care deeply about making eco-friendly choices. While we love a good vintage item, we don't use old boxes simply because cardboard degrades over time, and we want to ensure the total integrity and safety of your belongings during the trip.

What about downsizing? Are you going to make me get rid of all my stuff? And what happens to the items I leave behind?

Our Promise to You: You are always the boss. We never make decisions for you; we make them with you.

We will sit down with you and sort through your belongings at a pace that feels comfortable. Our goal is simply to guide your decisions so you preserve the items that hold the most meaning and will make your new place instantly feel like home.

For the items that won't be making the trip, we work hard to find them a good second life. We tap into our trusted network of local buyers, consignment stores, charity organizations, and responsible haulers to ensure your pieces are reused, donated, or recycled whenever possible.

What about movers? Do I have to track down a moving company myself?

You don't have to spend hours researching moving companies—we have you covered. We routinely partner with a select group of locally owned moving companies who know our team well and understand the unique care required for senior communities.

While you will contract with and pay the movers separately, we act as your project manager. We take care of all the scheduling, communication, and move-day logistics. That said, if you already have a favorite local mover you love, please let us know! We are always happy to make new friends.

How soon do I need to start this process? I'm not planning to move for a year or more!

It is truly never too soon to start the conversation. We would love to meet you now, learn about your home, and get to know your story.

By starting early, we can stay in touch as your plans gently evolve, ensuring the project never sneaks up on you or feels overwhelming. On the flip side, if life changes unexpectedly and you find yourself needing to move very quickly, please don't panic. Just give us a call, let us know what you need, and we can step in immediately to be of service.

What if I'm moving out of state? Do you have other locations around the country?

Here to Home is a homegrown, locally owned small business, but our reach is nationwide. We are proud members of a professional organization of Senior Move Managers, which connects us with trusted, like-minded colleagues all across the country.

If you are moving out of state, we can easily coordinate with a vetted professional in your new town to take the hand-off, ensuring you receive the exact same seamless, compassionate care when you arrive at your new front door.

Wow, this all sounds wonderful! How much does all of this cost?

We believe in honesty and transparency, so we keep our pricing incredibly straightforward: the same hourly rate for all our work plus materials plus an admin fee. Nothing hidden, no surprise up-charges for specific tasks, and no higher rates for different team members.

Because every home is a different size, the total cost varies, but most of our moves fall in the $6,000 to $8,000 range.

What makes a move cost more? Spending a significant amount of extra time sorting through decades of unorganized keepsakes, or having a very large volume of items to pack.

What keeps a move on the lower side? When families are able to take on some of the initial sorting and donating ahead of time, or when the home is already beautifully minimal.
